In this typical Sardinian house ( Lu Stazzu ) we prepare the roast meat:
the word "stazzu", derived
from the latin "statio", station, means farm, including the
house of the farmer.
In Arzachena and in the whole Gallura,
the territory is rich in these particular houses.
They are little pieces of work of what
we call spontaneous architecture.
Usually they don't stand out against
the landscape. It's difficult to notice them.
Their environmental impact is similar
to the one of dry walls, another fundamental element of the geography in
Gallura.
They are traces of the way in which
man has become part of the nature.
But the "stazzi" have also
other characteristics.
They are not just economic
organizations standing on their own.
They are part of a group that people
in Gallura call "cussoghja", a geographical and social entity
where a certain number of stazzi is characterized by peculiar moral
links like the "manialia".
During the agrarian cycle or in
particular occasion like the threshing, the vintage or the building of a
fence, all the neigh-bours of a farmer offer their help freely.
Another of these links is the "punitura".
According to this habit a shepherd who
has lost his sheep or his cattle for a stealing or for other reason ; is
given by each one his neighbours a sheep or a cow.
